You may have read that both Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) and Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) have recently won the prestigious Broad Prize. CMS won in 2011 and GCPS won in 2010. The $1 million Broad (rhymes with “road”) Prize is an annual award that honors large urban school districts that demonstrate the strongest student achievement and improvement while narrowing achievement gaps between income and ethnic groups.
According to the Board Foundation’s Press release from September of 2011, US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said
“Charlotte-Mecklenburg is a model for innovation in urban education. It has taken on the tough work of turning around low-performing schools, created a culture of using data to improve classroom instruction, and put a laser-like focus preparing students for college and careers.”
It’s not a coincidence that both of the winning districts CMS and GCPS also use Thinkgate’s performance management software, Elements™, to help these their teachers and staff more effectively gather and use data to improve achievement.
So what do these two districts have in common? All of the above!
